What is a Unimog?

The term Unimog is an acronym for the German word Universalmotorgerät, which means “universally-applicable motorized implement”and refers to multipurpose four wheel drive medium trucks introduced in the 1940s.

Unimogs are built solely by Mercedes-Benz. These classic vehicles are used in a wide range of applications such as road and rail, energy, airport, winter service, mowing, fire and rescue, haulage, construction, agriculture and arboriculture, highways and water and drainage.

People use Unimogs because of their off-road and all-terrain capabilities and their carrying, towing and hauling power, and more importantly, because they are capable of handling conditions that four-wheel drive trucks and tractors can’t.

Furthermore, Unimogs provide solutions for a great deal of industries including flood response, fire protection, snowplowing, animal rescue operations and a lot more. Mercedes-Benz works with a lot of other manufacturers in order to develop Unimogs with maximum utility for each specific industry.

What makes the Unimog special?

The Unimog is built using a combination of design concepts such as portal axles that allow very high ground clearance, torque tubes along with front and rear coil springs that allow maximum axle articulation and prevent axle windup and axle hop, 4×4 with front and rear locking differentials that provide on-demand all-wheel drive, low gearing for optimum performance, at least 45-degrees approach and departure angles for unrivaled climbing capability and an extensive list of implements suitable for various purposes. No other vehicle can boast of these features making this vehicle truly special.
